Product variants
You add variants to a product that comes in more than one option, such as size or color. Each combination of options for a product is a variant for that product.
For example, suppose that you sell T-shirts with two options: size and color. The size option has three values: small, medium, and large. The color option has two values: blue and green. One specific variant from these options is a small, blue T-shirt.
You can see a list of variants for a product on its product details page. You can also manage inventory for each variant from the product details page.
Adding variants
You add variants to a product that has more than one option, such as size or color. Each combination of options for a product is a variant of that product.
When you add a product, you adjust the Pricing and Inventory for the product from the product details page. However, when you add variants to the product, you need to adjust those settings for each variant from the variants table within the product details page.
To add variants while you are creating a product:
- At the bottom of the product page, click Add variations
- Enter a name for the option, such as Size, in Option name
- In Option Values, enter each option value followed by a comma, such as Medium, Large.
When you enter a comma, the option values appear as tags: - If your variants differ in more than one way, then click Add new option
- Click Apply changes
- A list of variants appears at the bottom of the product page.
Remove any combination of options that you don’t need. - You can modify prices, SKUs, and barcodes for individual variants
- Click Save
Add a variant by duplicating an existing variant
You can duplicate a variant to save time when adding similar variants, rather than entering the same details again. The duplicate variant has the same details as the original variant.
- Scroll down to the variants table at the bottom of the product page
- Locate the variants you want to duplicate and select them
- At the top right corner of the variants table, click on Bulk actions > Duplicate in a different…
For example, if your product has a Color option, to duplicate an existing variant into a different color, you would click on Bulk actions > Duplicate in a different Color - Click Save & close
The product now has new variants with the option value that you entered, and the other option values duplicated from the variants that you selected.
Editing variants
You can edit and remove variants for a product on its details page. This gives you the flexibility to change the variants that you sell for a product at any time.
You can change the details for a specific variant. For example, you can change the price of the variant, or change its image. By default, only the commonly used properties are displayed. To view the advanced settings of each variant (price lists, inventory per location, etc):
Simple products (with no variants)
- Navigate to your Inventory page
- Locate the parent product the variant belongs to and click its name to open the product details page
- On the product details page, click on Edit details button at the top right corner of the Inventory panel
Variable products
- Navigate to your Inventory page
- Locate the parent product the variant belongs to and click its name to open the product details page
- On the product details page, under the Variants table at the bottom of the page, click on the variant name you want to change
You can toggle details to be visible by clicking on the Columns button at the top right corner of the variant table.

Change the display order of options:
When your customers are viewing your products, they see variant options in a particular order. You can change the display order on the product details page.
- Scroll down to the variants table at the bottom of the product page
- At the top of the variants table, click on Sort variants
- In the Sort variations dialog, click and drag an option name or an option value to move it to a different position:
- Click Save & close
Edit a product’s options
- Scroll down to the variants table at the bottom of the product page
- At the top of the variants table, click on Edit options
- To add a new option, click Add new option and enter the option name and a default option value. The default option value is applied to all the existing variants.
- To change an option name, click it and enter the new name.
- To delete an option, click the trash can icon beside the option. When there is only one option, you can’t remove it by editing the options. If you want to sell a product without any variants, then you need to delete all the variants.
Delete a variant
When you delete a variant, it is permanently removed. If you don’t want to sell a product with variants anymore, then you need to delete all its variants.
Product variants that are on open sale/purchase orders or bundled into a bundle/kit cannot be deleted unless the orders are closed and the variant removed from the bundle.
